Established in 2001, Las Vegas-based Cannery Casino Resorts (CCR) owns and operates the Cannery Casino & Hotel in North Las Vegas, the Eastside Cannery Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, and the Meadows Racetrack & Casino in Washington County, Pennsylvania. For more than ten years, the company and its partners have developed strategic plans for the construction and management of gaming facilities across the country.
In early 2013 the company CIO determined it was time to upgrade the company’s messaging servers, which were approaching end of life and no longer covered by vendor support. Cannery Casino Resorts had a mix of IP PBX systems from Cisco, NEC and Mitel/InterTel, and Microsoft Exchange/Outlook for email.
The company wanted a system that enabled fully integrated unified communications with messaging, voice, video and text all on one platform. With nearly 1,500 workers who regularly use voice and email—many of whom are mobile workers—it was essential that the organization could easily support these workers with functionality and applications going forward.
Cannery Casino Resorts needed a new system that would enable them to:
- Leverage existing telephony and messaging capability
- Deliver fully integrated unified communications: messaging, voice, video and text
- Reduce costs and IT support burden
- Virtualize the environment to reduce on-premises footprint
As a Microsoft customer, the company naturally considered Microsoft Office 365, but they also evaluated Google Apps for Business. They quickly realized that Google had extended its reach into the enterprise and SMB markets and had a very competitive and cost effective offering. During this evaluation period, Cannery Casino Resorts CIO was also given a recommendation to talk with Esna and Google reseller SADA Systems based on their experience with similar enterprise deployments.
Evaluating Esna, in addition to robust UC capability that met all their requirements, the team found a significant cost differential between Microsoft Office 365 and Google Apps/Esna. The Office 365 license would be approximately $20 per user/per month versus less than $7 per user/per month from Google/Esna.

By teaming up with Esna and SADA, Cannery Casino Resorts was able to secure a cost-effective and scalable, integrated premises/cloud solution that leveraged its existing telephone systems—Cisco CallManager, NEC and Mitel—using Esna Officelinx to integrate all three. Esna’s SIP-based Officelinx solution also allowed for virtual servers and fewer hardware components, adding to the cost benefit of lower license fees.
Not only did the company realize significant cost savings with this approach, they were able to empower employees with powerful collaboration applications in the Google Apps cloud, including hosted email, shared calendars, shared documents, and websites as well as features such as presence and mobility.
Cannery Casino Resorts found the most value in the convenient access to messaging for workers no matter where they happen to be, or what device they use (PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones), as long as they have access to the Internet. The company has begun using Esna's iLink Pro Chrome browser extension for click-to-call, real-time presence, and escalation of voice messages to Hangouts, providing a more immersive experience of communication and collaboration. And they are also in the process of rolling out Esna iLink for Cisco WebEx, which will soon enable their employees to book WebEx meetings from within Google Apps.
